This course is designed as a research survey class under the general topic of Emergency Management. The students will learn and work their way through the material that ranges from the definition of what a crisis is to the study of several crises to the understanding of the role of cooperative management in dealing with a crisis. We will also examine the role of the federal government in the response to a crisis. Preparedness is the key to having a successful corporate emergency management plan. What can go wrong? We will explore what it takes to have a successful plan, in the adage failure to plan is a plan to fail. Crisis leadership is the ability to react to a disaster, so disasters can be planned for such as natural disasters such as hurricanes as you will have time to prepare. A worker’s strike can be planned for as they rarely happen spontaneously. Other events like a terrorist attack, fire, earthquake or even in today’s age cyber-attacks can have plans but seldom do they have any advance timing to prepare for.
